EOTO SOmthing I learned #2
In class on December 7th, we all presented our terms and concepts presentations. Each person came up and showed the detailed research that they did on their subjects. A few of these presentations stood out to me.
1. Illusion affect: This is the theory that if someone is presented with the same information repeatedly, they will believe in it eventually.
The idea pairs strongly with what you would expect from politics. The example given was with the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal. The idea that she was involved in some very morbid actions was repetitively spread around so much so that despite being what some considered the obvious choice, she lost to trump because the public's faith in her had been shaken.
2. Gatekeeping: This idea was made by Kurt Lewin a German psychologist. It centers around the idea that a single person determine what ideas or content get past them and to the masses. And, unlike the image gate keeping has today it started as a concept of protecting people from false information and or harmful content.
3. Spiral of silence: The idea that people will withhold an idea or thought from your group because you can tell it would be against what the majority stands with. This is usually due to a concern of threats such as loss of relationships, aggressive responses, or revenge/spiteful actions being taken against you. This can pile up and eventually people will train themselves to remain silent instead of sharing their thoughts.
4. Media Dependence Theory: peoples dependence on media is dependent on how media affects Individuals, Social Stability, Activeness of the audience, The media itself,
5. Whistleblowers: This is the act of someone that has insider information about a group/company/organization. Especially if it the group has some sort of unethical actions going on.
6. Media Consolidation: This is the concentration of media being owned by fewer and fewer companies. Meaning that there may be many forms of media but they are all owned by only two or three companies. This greatly narrows down the scope of the feeds from these media sources. because they will only be sharing content/news that benefits the company that owns them. So because of this there is a loss in perspectives and of arguments for both sides.
7. Net Neutrality-the basics: The idea that no internet provider should show any bias or favoritism between them and any of the internet browsers. However in 2015 trumps party added a man named Ajit Pai. He worked on demolishing the net neutrality laws that had been set up in order to pursue his idea of a truly free and unburdened internet.
